How Often Should You Have Your Chimney Swept or Cleaned?

As a baseline, to maintain optimal functionality – as well as your family’s well-being and safety – having your chimney swept (cleaned) and inspected at least once per year is advised. That said, the precise answer to this question is really as unique as your home is! The duration between service will vary, as there are many things to consider.

Some examples include:

  • frequency of use
  • overall efficiency levels
  • level of creosote buildup
  • what you’re burning (gas, hardwoods, seasoned fuel, etc.)
  • any structural changes (renovations, settling foundation)
  • environmental factors
  • obstructions in the chimney (tree debris, animals nesting, etc)

Booking annual inspections will ensure any buildup or areas of concerns are spotted and swiftly addressed. That said, if you’re a frequent burner, booking two inspections per year may be advised.

How Can I Tell If My Chimney Needs To Be Swept?

Now you’re curious, right?  So what can you do on your own to see if your chimney needs to be swept?

First, grab a flashlight and take a critical look at your chimney to see what you can spot inside the flue. Our bet is you don’t see any visible damage. In fact, this is what most home inspectors do and it’s why so many things get missed.

However, you can still ask yourself…

  1. Is there debris?
  2. Do you see any indication of the things discussed above?
  3. Are you just not sure what to look at or for?

If you answer yes to any one of these three questions you need to call a professional and certified chimney technician to come out and sweep or inspect your chimney.

We just had an awesome experience with Kelsey from Fireplaces by Weiss Johnson. Very friendly service, and absolutely went the extra mile to fix our fireplace, but also to explain everything to us so that we can prevent issues in the future. Thanks for the great service and experience Kelsey!

How Do I Keep From Getting Creosote & Buildup?

So, while you can’t totally prevent creosote from coating your chimney, you can take steps to minimize it by making sure you are burning dry and seasoned wood. This alone means you are actively participating in preventing a sudden, devastating flash fire.

By the same token, you can’t stop a family of squirrels from making your chimney their summer cottage – but you can prevent fatal, smoke-induced carbon monoxide poisoning by having those chimney squatters evicted.

Once your chimney has been serviced and received a clean health bill, enjoy! Just be sure to mark your calendar or set an alert in your phone to schedule your next chimney appointment twelve months out.

Pro tip: Call a couple of months ahead to reserve your date, ensuring your home is scheduled at the appropriate time. Or, better yet, schedule in the spring when no one else is thinking about getting their chimney maintenance done! You’ll be ahead of the game and our schedule books will be more open – so finding a convenient spot to schedule will be much easier.

Then, between appointments, keep your eyes out for these changes which could require professional assessment and additional chimney sweeps:

  • Smoke entering your home from the fireplace
  • Chimney fire (always call 911 first)
  • Fumes or smoke smells
  • New staining on the brick
  • Scratching or animal noises in the chimney
  • Corrosion or rust on the chimney
  • Moisture in the chimney or fireplace
