Do Gas Fireplaces Need Servicing?
It’s no surprise that gas fireplaces are becoming the number one choice in heating homes. They are energy efficient, convenient, and easy to use, and they don’t produce ash or require wood storage. That said, it’s because of this that people often forget that gas fireplaces, inserts, and log sets still require regular maintenance checks and cleanings.
In fact, failing to address this maintenance can lead to lowered efficiency levels as well as potential clogs in the vent system. Let’s remember – low maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance at all.
That’s why it’s important to have your entire gas fireplace system inspected and serviced, top to bottom, at least once a year. This will help to greatly reduce the risk of dangerous emissions, such as carbon monoxide, entering your home. Even if your gas fireplace is working properly, a yearly inspection can help reveal hidden problems before they become a hazard or expensive repair.
When it comes to the safety of your home and loved ones, you can trust the skilled and experienced technicians here at Fireplaces by Weiss-Johnson. We have the expertise and equipment to ensure your gas fireplace concerns are taken care of.
We had a great experience purchasing our wood-burning stove at Weiss-Johnson. Steve Tavares, our salesman, was very knowledgeable and accommodating. The install crew was very professional and found a good way to install the chimney despite a challenging attic.

What Maintenance Is Required for a Gas Fireplace?
Just like a wood-burning fireplace, a gas fireplace also has many components that need to be working properly to ensure it’s performing at its best. Our gas technicians perform a thorough service of your gas fireplace or insert to ensure it is operating safely and properly.
This includes the following:
- Inspection of the appliance, connections, and the chimney system. This should be performed before each burning season.
- Testing of the blowers and electrical components. Just as with any appliance, parts can wear out, causing a malfunction which can affect the efficiency and safety of the system.
- Cleaning the glass. Your system isn’t going to do you much good if you can’t actually see the flames and enjoy them, right?
- Inspecting the firebox and logs. The firebox may show signs of rust or flaking, and even though they aren’t real logs, the ceramic or cement logs in your gas fireplace can deteriorate over time. The good news is that the logs can be swapped out without having to replace the whole fireplace.
- Checking for soot. Although gas fireplaces burn cleaner, they still produce small amounts of soot. We remove and clean the gas logs and vacuum up any debris around them, then clear the ports of any spider webs. (Spiders are attracted to propane and often build nests and webs in these ports, plugging them, and creating issues with your fireplace.) Other burner components we check are the thermocouples, thermopiles, valves, and air shutters.
- Checking the ignition system for a safe and instant start. Oftentimes, when people are experiencing problems with their fireplace not starting, it is because of the pilot light. Sometimes the pilot light won’t turn on, and other times, the pilot light doesn’t glow blue, which means it’s not getting hot enough. If your unit is equipped with an electrical ignition system, this is checked as well, because over time it can become worn or corroded.
- Checking and replacing the embers (rocks, glass, stones, or coals). These offer a protective barrier under the burner that protects the fireplace floor.
- Checking for blockages. These might be caused by animals, leaves, or other lawn debris, and they can cause toxic fumes to invade your home. Always make sure the vents and chimney are clear.
- Replacing batteries in carbon monoxide detectors and fireplace remotes. When it comes to gas fireplace maintenance, the most commonly overlooked piece of maintenance is replacing batteries in the carbon monoxide detectors and fireplace remote. You wouldn’t believe how often we get calls about a gas fireplace not working properly, and the diagnosis is simply dead batteries in the remote.
This list is just scratching the surface of the components that need to be serviced regularly. Because there are so many parts to a gas fireplace, it takes extensive knowledge to know where to look and what to look for. This is why we recommend scheduling an appointment with a certified chimney company – like us!
